doing my deep read rewatch of SPN and I just noticed tonight that the show uses a similar style of over-the-shoulder shot in profile of Dean half in shadow on (at least) two occasions in season one.

first when he's on the long pause, trying to find the right response to avoid popping Sam's "hey at least our dad didn't beat us!" bubble in Nightmare

and a second time a few episodes later when he's watching Sam and John have an emotional farewell in Shadow that he's literally physically barred from joining in by their body language closing him out of it

I'm fascinated by how well the show uses visual language in this way to convey Dean's inner turmoil and resentment towards John in no uncertain terms. that turn away from something he knows damn good and well but doesn't look at head on because if he did he'd start yelling truths that would nuke the family he's spent his entire life desperately trying to hold together
